COMMISSIONING EXERCISES 1500 HRS - 4 MARCH 1960 The Sixth Naval District Band played various selections. The Invocation was given by Captain P.W. Dickman, Chaplain Corps, USN. Mr. Henry Z. Carter, Executive Vice President Avondale marine Ways, Inc. was introduced by Captain C.T. Mauro, Chief of Staff, Sixth Naval district. After Mr. Carter's remarks, RADM D.C. Varian, USN Commander Mine Force, US Atlantic Fleet, was introduced by RADM K.M. McManes, Commandant, Sixth Naval District. After RADM Varians remarks, the reading of Navy Department Orders to Commission U.S.S. McMorris De-1036 was performed by RADM McManes. The Ensign, Jack, and Commission Pennant (see picture) are hoisted as the band plays the National Anthem. With the ship now in commission, remarks and reading of orders were performed by LCDR Martin M Zenni, USN. The first watch was set by the Executive Officer, LT. Earl H. Graffam, USN. The Holy Bible was presented to the U.S.S. McMorris DE-1036 by the American Bible Society by Captain Dickman. Medals of the late VADM Charles H. McMorris, USN by Mr. David S. McMorris. Captain Dickman gave the Benediction, after which the Sixth Naval District Band played additional selections. The crew members present that day are listed below. Some of these men have been located in time to attend the first reunion of the U.S.S. McMorris DE-1036, October 1997 in Charleston, SC. A dinner cruise was enjoyed by all reunion participants on the Spirit of Charleston as it went up the Cooper River. The reunion was officially started as the "Mighty Plank Owner Players" read the Commissioning Poem to all present. This group included: Alfred "Doc" Corradetti, Jules Galbreth, James H. Maxwell, Jr., James C. Pike, Albert P. Roach, and Jewel D. Sharpe. The plank owner roster of 2000-2001 is growing. The search is on to locate as many of these shipmates as possible. The complete commissioning roster follows. An asterisk next to the name indicates that the person has been located. This page is designed to be a living history of their service aboard the U.S.S. McMorris DE-1036. |
