Defender of Liberty!

Editors Note

This coming weekend is the Memorial Day weekend. I took a moment to read some history of this day. I was surprised to say I wasn't aware of the rich history and background of this day of remembrance for those who died in our nation's service.

Originally called Decoration Day, it was officially proclaimed Memorial Day on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, when flowers were placed at Arlington National Cemetery. While many towns or cities lay claim to being the birthplace of this day, Waterloo, NY was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966.

Whatever you do this weekend, take a moment to honor our fallen hero's, and thank a veteran if you have that opportunity. Be safe, and enjoy the day!

If you haven't noticed as yet, the San Antonio Reunion itinerary is now posted to the website. Take a moment to look at all of the activities we have lined up. I want to thank John Peterson for his work in putting this together for our group. We look forward to a great turnout and a lot of fun. Look to the reunion information section for more information on how this new process for registration will work. More importantly, put the reunion into your plans, and register early.

More of our group continues to visit the website. I check the guestbook frequently for new arrivals. Expect a blast email simply to make you aware of the more recent postings to the website. Thanks again to Scott Vliek for his hard work and dedication to keeping things together on the site. Also, the email will appeal to you to consider joining the reunion in San Antonio, TX this Fall. The dates October 12 - 15, 2006 should provide good weather, and I am told this is a beautiful city. I should note again, that if your email address is not correct as posted to the ships roster on the website, please let Scott or myself know. If you do not see you name listed, tell us and it will be corrected immediately.

One other note of interest to many, the Ships Store will be open again for business soon. I have a dozen new hats on order that I expect to see in the coming weeks. We started to do business with EagleCrest, the company that supplies the regular Navy for all of their hats, etc. When you see the details in the ships store section of the website, contact me if you have any questions, or to place an order.

I hope this letter finds everyone well. Please stay in touch with us, we are interested in you. Jules and Lorraine Galbreth seem to be settled in after Katrina put them back in Texas. Jules told me the other day that he spoke to Ken and Carol Small and Chuck and Janell (Miss Magnolia) Miller. Both had attended out first reunion in Charleston back in 1997, and I hear they are planning to be with us in San Antonio?? I hope so! Great and compassionate people, I owe a debt of gratitude to Ken and Carol from early times.

Theresa and I will be traveling to Connecticut this weekend to spend time with Vic and Carol Yanosy. Vic retired from the Army (boo) Reserves and will be marching this weekend in a Memorial Day parade. He also retired this last year from the weather service, and living large. For those that remember Vic, he was our illustrious weather observer aboard the Mac.

Of sad note, I did hear recently that CSC Sam Shirley, who attended our San Diego reunion passed away this last year around November, and in that same time frame LT Ed Shaffer also passed away. We honor them in our Taps section of the website.

I also hear that CAPT Ralph Spencer is doing well. While unable to speak, he appears to be doing OK. If you know Ralph, please send him a note. We want to encourage him to attend the San Antonio reunion, so if you drop a line, tell him you want to see him there. I am certain he would appreciate that. A real gentleman, Ralph continues to support our efforts.

My best wishes to all of you and your families. Enjoy the summer months where ever you are, and remember to keep the reunion in the forefront of your plans for the Fall. I look forward to seeing everyone again. The reunion is a place for all of us to catch up and renew our friendships, have a great time, and enjoy the spirit of the Mighty Mac.

Best Wishes!

Reunion Information

The San Antonio reunion itinerary is now posted to the website. Simply go to the reunion information tab and you will find the complete layout of the reunion. Questions can be directed to me, but it is pretty self-explanatory.

The registration process is simple. The link for registering is located at the bottom of the itinerary page. You must print this form, complete it, and send it to Creative Training & Conference Management. The address is provided. As you know, this registers you with us only.. You must still make you own travel arrangements, and you must register with the hotel as well.

I am pleased we are able to keep costs as low as possible. We have a lot going on from Thursday night on through Sunday. In the past, we had Friday's dinner on your own. This year we added a package for the River Walk and dinner on Friday night. As always, everything is predicated on meeting minimum requirements for participants, so a good turnout is important. My goal from the very beginning was 100 people. 50 shipmates/50 guests. We can do it!

Dues

Oh my! The coffers are bare. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we are broke. Little to nothing has been coming in over the last few years. Our request is that you make a donation to our efforts of $25.00 per year. We some ever so faithful, but we could stand to use a good shot in the arm.

Dues are used to defer costs and provide amenities at the reunion we otherwise could not handle from a cost perspective. Thank goodness we don't use mail anymore, or we would be in trouble. Thanks to the internet and email.

I encourage you to consider this a one time per year donation. Payment can be made by check to USS McMorris Reunion. My address is listed on the website.

Thank You!

($25.00 per year donation to support all reunion efforts is suggested. Payment information can be found here
FYI: The website is not supported out of McMorris funds)

The Log

I need to defer this to the next newsletter. Be patient with me. Some interesting Naval Lore will be coming up in the future.

Our Mission

There is no agenda behind our efforts, nor is any intended, other than to keep our Reunion Group members well informed through the newsletter and our website.
